23. Outsmart Invaders
Interpretive Intent: While its easy to run to the garden store for chemical pesticides
and herbicides when a problem arises in the garden, there are many organic controls
and methods that can be employed just as effectively, and with fewer long-term side
effects. Commonly used pesticides can harm the heart, cause nervous system poisoning,
dizziness, headaches, nausea, and even cancer. In addition to harming children who
are most susceptible, pesticides also harm adults, pets and wildlife. Using poisons
and chemicals to kill insects or rodents has a negative effect on the environment
in many ways. One problem is that family pets, birds and other mammals eat the poisoned
animals and they themselves are affected.
Another important reason to minimize chemical use is that these poisons are carried
by rain into streams, lakes and the groundwater supply. Drinking water that is dependent
on well sources may become polluted from excessive chemical use, effecting entire
communities.
Exhibit Design: This exhibit will be a wall with terrariums and beaker insets showing
organic controls. The emphasis on this wall will be on ground water protection and
environmental protection. The potential consequences of chemical use to control
pests, and the benefits of organic controls will be emphasized.
