17. Effortless Irrigation

Interpretive Intent: Automatic controllers enable the user to have great flexibility and control of the time and amount of water applied to the landscape. Individual stations within the controller are used to apply water to different types of landscaping, for instance turf vs. drought tolerant native plants or low water use shrubs. Individual stations also differentiate between plants that use spray irrigation vs. those that use xeriscape drip irrigation. They can be set for night operation so that water is applied when the wind and temperature conditions are most favorable. Controllers come in a variety of configurations, watering programs, and number of stations, allowing the user to find the most appropriate for their own landscape.

Exhibit Design: The Controller Exhibit area is a large clock in the pavement that indicates how important time is to irrigation. Etched into the pavement is a clock face with giant hands over head that visitors can set to cast shadows indicating the perfect time on the pavement. A graphic of Father Time graces the top of the pole.

Several different types of irrigation controllers are displayed on one side of the path with sensors that can increase their effectiveness, and are displayed on cookie-cutter style houses.
