21. Compost Salad
Interpretive Intent: Approximately 30% of the trash in a city is plant material
green waste – leaves, lawn clippings, shrub trimmings and branches. When these materials
are taken to the local landfill it quickly overfills it. Collecting green waste
and composting it eliminates this waste and is a benefit to the landscape. Compost
added to the soil adds nutrients, conserves water and controls soil erosion – all
especially important in the desert environment.
Exhibit Design: Large salad bowls will contain grass clippings, plant material consisting
of small twigs and greenery, and leaves. These bowls are located on decorative paving
adjacent to Composting. Trimming tools are underfoot, cast and stained into the
pavement.
