9. Perfect Planting
Interpretive Intent: This area will show the five steps taken when
putting a plant in the ground.
Exhibit Design: A wheelbarrow, shovel and digging fork begin the
exhibit. Whimsical 3/D cookie cutter shrubs will be designed to show each of the
correct steps to planting. Step One shows the proper way to dig a planting pit and
the correct size of the pit for the root ball of the plant. Step Two will show placement
of the plant into the planting pit. Step Three demonstrates the application of fertilizer,
soil amendments and the correct proportion of backfill soil mix needed. Step Four
shows the backfill mix put into the pit and the creation of a small lip of soil
around the pit to create a shallow water basin in order to hold needed water in
the area above the plant’s roots when watering. Step Five shows the completed installation
of a newly planted shrub complete with top dressing of water conserving mulch.
