5. Nursery Shopping
Interpretive Intent: This exhibit is designed to educate people
about how to buy and shop for plants and garden supplies at local nurseries. Many
people are not sure what size plant material is appropriate for a new landscape.
Is a bigger plant in a small container better? What do those yellow leaves mean?
Why are some plants in plastic containers, others in metal and yet others in wood
boxes? Will smaller sized nursery plants outgrow larger nursery stock of the same
species?
Exhibit Design: An entry trellis, garden tool shed building and
terraced learning patio set a nursery theme for this area. The exhibit explains
the sizes that plants are generally available in and how to determine if the plant
you are considering is healthy, as well as how smaller sized nursery plants may
outgrow larger plants of the same species. The tool shed will contain a variety
of garden tools typically found at nursery or home improvement stores along with
descriptions of their uses and applications in garden use.
The terraced concrete seat steps will hold various types and sizes of nursery stock
consisting of flats, 1 gal., 5 gal. and 15 gal. plant material sizes. There will
also be potted plants and pots on these steps. One edge of this classroom area will
also display 5 gal., 15 gal. and 24’ box tree sizes. All container material will
be periodically changed.
