3. Shading & Micro-Climates
Interpretive Intent: Plantings can be used to change the temperature
and humidity of an area and create a more comfortable microclimate. In a dry environment
this relief from the elements can make the difference in enjoying the outdoors.
In cities, tree plantings and pavement shading can have a large effect on the urban
heat island phenomena.
Exhibit Design: A shady spot off the main path is formed by an
organically shaped hideaway which creates a room unto itself. This area is ringed
with landscape berms and evergreen and canopy trees. Shrub plantings will form a
low hedge as well. Benches are placed inside this secluded spot of cooling shade
trees for a welcome respite from the summer heat, sun and wind.
