4. Scene or Unseen
Interpretive Intent: Many times yards have undesirable views such
as neighboring commercial property, busy streets, trashy neighboring lots, or other
unattractive buildings and structures. The use of plant material as well as mounding
can help to soften or block these undesirable views. Plants can be chosen which
are dense, tall, compact, or evergreen to be used as screening material.
Exhibit Design: This exhibit is located at the southeast end of
the garden, primarily to screen views into the maintenance and growing grounds for
the Garden. No matter how hard we try, maintenance areas get cluttered. Layers of
plant materials are displayed and used to block these views. Tall evergreen trees
in the background, tall shrubs and low to medium plant material is used in the foreground
to screen out any views permitted at the lower edges of the high shrubs and trees.
Mounding of the exhibit area is also a technique used to screen lower views.
